The Best Thanksgiving Placemats
Placemats are the cheapest layer that makes a table look set rather than laid. They are also the layer most people under-buy, because almost every set on sale comes in fours and almost no holiday table seats four.

Every buy link goes straight to the retailer, so the price you see is the live one on the day you buy.
Short answer: buy machine-washable placemats at 13 by 19 inches, and buy enough of them. The standard retail pack is four. Count the chairs you will actually put around the table on the day, round up, and order that many sets — a table of ten needs three packs, not two.
Size guide: rectangular mats run from about 12 by 18 up to 14 by 20 inches, the oval standard is 13 by 19, and round mats run 12 to 15 inches across. A standard dinner plate is 8 to 9 inches, so anything in those ranges clears the plate. Leave roughly 4 inches of bare table between neighboring mats so nobody eats elbow to elbow.

Scores are our own editorial rubric, explained on how we pick. Four criteria per category, scored out of ten, so the leading pick is clear at a glance.
What we judged them on
Placemats are a category where almost every review is a photograph and a color. These are the four things that decide whether a set works on the one day of the year it has to work hardest.
- Does the plate fit with margin? A standard dinner plate is 8 to 9 inches across. A mat has to clear that plus a fork on one side and a knife and spoon on the other. In practice that means a long edge of at least 18 inches. A mat that the plate overhangs does not read as a place setting, it reads as a coaster that got ambitious.
- Can it be washed, and how easily? Machine washable beats hand wash beats wipe clean, on a table where gravy and red wine are both in play. The exception is the heat-rated board, which trades washability for something more useful.
- What happens when something hot lands on it? This is the question the rest of this site exists to answer, and it applies to the table too. Printed fabric mats are not trivets. A glazed cork-backed board effectively is one: Pimpernel rates its surface to about 212F, which covers anything coming out of a roaster oven.
- Will you use it again next year? A bordered harvest print works from September to the end of November. A mat printed with a cartoon turkey works for one afternoon. Same money, twelve weeks against four hours.
Notice what is not on that list: thread count, provenance, and whether the pattern is on trend. Nobody at your table will notice any of them, and two of the three are unverifiable anyway.
How many placemats you actually need
This is the mistake, and it is almost universal. Placemats are merchandised in sets of four because four is a weeknight family. Thanksgiving is not a weeknight family. If you are hosting the big meal for the first time, you are probably seating eight to twelve.
Do the arithmetic before you order rather than after. Count the chairs that will be at the table on the day, including the folding one from the garage and the two from the desk upstairs. Divide by the pack size. Round up, always.
- Seating 6: two sets of four, or one set of six.
- Seating 8: two sets of four exactly — and buy a third anyway, because a mat gets written off every year.
- Seating 10: three sets of four, or two sets of six.
- Seating 12: three sets of four, or two sets of six.
Two practical notes on top of the count. First, order early enough that a second set can still arrive if the first one is the wrong color in your dining room light — seasonal linens sell through and do not restock in November. Second, a set of six is worth paying slightly more for, because it maps onto real tables better than a set of four does.
If the kids are eating at a separate table, that table does not have to match. Something wipeable there is a better decision than something coordinated, and nobody over the age of nine will comment.
Fabric, board or woven: what the material decides
Printed fabric. Polyester or a cotton blend, the default, and the right default. It launders, it folds into a drawer, it is the cheapest route to a coordinated table, and the pattern can carry the whole seasonal signal so nothing else has to. Its one real limit is heat. Treat a fabric mat as decoration that happens to be under a plate, not as protection for the table.
Cork-backed hardboard. A rigid board, glazed on top, cork underneath. This is the traditional English table mat and it solves a different problem: it is heat and stain resistant, it does not slide, and the cork means it will not scratch a wood table. Wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it. Never put it in a dishwasher and never leave it wet, because water gets into the board edge and the mat delaminates.
Woven and braided. Jute, braided cotton-polyester, burlap. These carry texture rather than pattern, which is why they suit autumn so well — they say harvest without saying Thanksgiving. The trade is cleaning. A braided surface holds crumbs, and most of them want a shake outside and a damp cloth rather than a machine cycle.
Vinyl and wipe-clean. The honest choice for a kids’ table or a household where spills are routine. It is not the material anybody puts on a table they are proud of, and that is fine, because the kids’ table does not need to be.
What layers with what
The common anxiety here is whether a placemat is allowed on top of a tablecloth. It is, and it is the arrangement most styled tables use. The thing to avoid is not layering, it is two patterns doing the same job in the same place.
The order, bottom to top:
- 1. The table or a cloth. Bare wood if it is worth showing. Otherwise a plain cloth — our tablecloth roundup has the measuring formula, which catches more people out than the choice of pattern does.
- 2. The runner, if you are using one. Down the center. Placemats sit either side of it and may overlap its edges slightly — that is normal and looks intentional. The runner guide covers lengths.
- 3. The placemat. Squared to the table edge, about an inch in from it, one per chair.
- 4. A charger, if you want one. This is the cheapest fix for a dinner service that does not match, which is the real problem on a table of twelve.
- 5. The plate, napkin and cutlery. Full placement is in our guide to setting a Thanksgiving table.
One rule holds the whole thing together: let exactly one layer carry the pattern. Patterned cloth plus patterned runner plus patterned mats is the single most common way a table that cost real money ends up looking busy. If the mats are the interesting layer, keep the cloth plain.
Creases, spills, heat and storage
Unpack them two days early. Fabric mats arrive folded and arrive creased. Lay them flat on the table overnight and their own weight does most of the work; a cool iron on the reverse finishes the stubborn ones. Doing this on the morning is how a perfectly good set looks cheap.
Deal with spills the same evening. Cranberry and red wine set. Rinse in cold water before they dry, then wash normally. This is the entire argument for machine-washable mats over anything that needs special handling.
Hot dishes need a plan, not a hope. Decide before the day where the hot things are going to land — a trivet, a board, or the cork-backed mats — because on the day somebody carrying a 12-pound roasting pan will put it on the nearest flat surface. If the food is coming out over an hour or two, a warming setup solves the problem better than any mat; see how to keep food warm for a party.
Store fabric mats flat or rolled, boards flat. Folded in the same creases every year and the lines become permanent. Rigid boards go flat in a cupboard with something soft between them so the glaze does not scuff. The rest of the seasonal kit is covered on fall decor storage and reuse.

#1 · Best overall
OWENIE Embroidered Maple Leaf Fall Placemats, Set of 4
The standard 13 by 19 inch size with the leaves embroidered rather than printed, so the pattern does not wash or wear off the way a print does.
A placemat has one structural job and one decorative job, and the structural one is the reason to start here. It defines a person — this rectangle is yours, your plate goes in the middle of it, your glass goes above and to the right. On a table seating ten where the plates do not all match and two of the chairs came from another room, that boundary does more to make the table look considered than any centerpiece.
Thirteen by nineteen inches is the size to buy. It is one of the standard dimensions, it clears a standard eight to nine inch dinner plate with margin for cutlery on both sides, and it leaves room for the glass without the mat running into your neighbor. Anything smaller than about twelve by eighteen and the plate overhangs, which looks like a mat that lost an argument with the dinnerware.
The reason this set wins is washability rather than pattern. Polyester goes in the machine and comes out, and on a table carrying gravy, cranberry and red wine within reach of ten pairs of elbows, that is not a nice-to-have. The honest limitation is heat: this is a printed fabric mat, so a hot casserole goes on a trivet, not on the placemat. If people in your house put serving dishes down wherever there is space, buy the cork-backed boards below for the middle of the table and keep these at the settings.

Frequently asked questions
13 by 19 inches is the size most people want. Rectangular mats run from about 12 by 18 up to 14 by 20 inches and round mats run 12 to 15 inches across, so anything in those ranges clears a standard 8 to 9 inch dinner plate with room for cutlery. Below about 12 by 18 the plate starts to overhang.
One per chair, and buy a spare set. Most placemats are sold in packs of four, so a table of eight needs two packs, a table of ten needs three, and a table of twelve needs three. Count the chairs that will genuinely be at the table on the day, including the ones you are borrowing from other rooms, then round up.
About 4 inches of bare table between neighboring mats. That is enough that two people sitting side by side are not touching elbows while they eat. If your table cannot give you 4 inches at the number of settings you need, buy a smaller mat rather than squeezing a larger one.
Yes, and it is what most set tables do. Keep one layer plain. A patterned cloth under patterned mats is the thing that makes a table look busy rather than layered, so if the mats are doing the decorating, use a plain cloth underneath.
Not on a fabric one. Printed polyester and cotton mats will mark or scorch, and nothing about them protects the table underneath. Cork-backed hardboard mats are the exception — Pimpernel rates its glazed surface to about 212F, which covers anything coming out of a roaster oven. Everything else needs a trivet.
Placemats, if you have to choose one. They define each setting, which is what makes a table look deliberate, and they cost a fraction of what a correctly sized cloth does. A cloth is the better buy only when the table itself is not worth showing — a scratched surface, a folding table, or two tables pushed together at slightly different heights.
