Count first, then buy
Almost everything that goes wrong at a New Year’s party is a counting problem, not a taste problem. Not enough glasses. A kit for ten when eighteen people came. Two noisemakers for a room of twenty-five.
So before you look at anything, settle the number. Then apply these multipliers:

Decorate one wall, not four
The instinct is to spread decoration around the whole room, and it produces a room that looks slightly decorated everywhere and properly decorated nowhere.
Concentrate it instead. One balloon backdrop against one wall does more for the feel of the night — and for every photograph taken — than the same money spread across four walls. Put it where people naturally gather, near the drinks rather than in a corridor.
And build it in the afternoon. Balloon arch kits reliably take longer than the box implies; 60 to 90 minutes is realistic. Build it over a film, not at seven in the evening with guests due at eight.
The midnight plan
Midnight is thirty seconds long and it is what people remember. It needs about five minutes of planning.
- 11:40 — hand out hats, horns and glasses. Not at 11:58.
- 11:45 — pour the sparkling wine. Pouring for twenty people takes longer than you think.
- 11:50 — get the countdown on whatever screen you are using, sound up. Test it beforehand.
- 11:58 — everyone in one room.
- Midnight — that is it, you are done.

You already own most of what you need
This is the part worth pausing on. A New Year’s party is a standing-up buffet, and you bought the equipment for exactly that five weeks ago.
The warming tray that held the sides on Thanksgiving holds the hot food here. Slow cookers on Warm hold meatballs and dips for four hours without attention. The large platters hold everything else.
